Back in the black!

Quick update:

Caught up on a ton of sleep
Feeling really good
Trying out a session journal to record goals and results (not $)
Got out of my poker funk.
Huge day at 50nl 6max: 10 buyins in 6k hands by 4pm
Maintained A game state of mind for 4 one hour sessions
Going to have 5 days off of work per week until November as opposed to 2 with full salary (bink!)

Had a big opportunity for tilt and ended up joking about it with the other player in chat instead. Hand History:

Stars 50nl 6max

Preflop: Hero has JTs as PFRer, c/r happy Villain calls in SB

Flop: Tc5d4s, checks through
Turn: 5s with the flushdraw out now, Hero bets 2/3 pot, villain c/r almost pot, Hero soul-reads that Villain has squadoosh and calls to induce river bluffs
River: 2c and Villain leads for 3/4 pot, Hero snapcalls and gets shown 22

Hero says: "nh"
Villain says: "that's generally my strategy, make stupid plays and then get there"
...

So hopefully you guys won't have to listen to me whine for a while :)

Added up every pot > 50bb and it's 2/3 this shit and 1/3 bad play due to tilt from this shit (if you count shoving 30%+ equity for 0EV bad play when you know they're never folding). Possibly my first losing month ever if things don't turn around fast. I think I've hit the "worse than you ever thought possible" because it's not possible to run worse than this imo - and I've had more than a few gross runs. $2k+ under EV plus unbelievable amounts of KK vs AA and set vs weird straight coolers between 2/3 50nl and 1/3 100nl for the month in only 75k hands.

Everyone on the forums wants to talk about ranges and playing peoples' ranges but I have a new improved plan: take your absolute hand strength and just +1 it to find out what they have. Oh and FYI people don't fold hands when they don't beat anything when I shove because they have an under pa--ooooohhhh shiny over there! ie. bottom-pair-no-draw is +1 of nut flush draw. Don't think about making that NFD either because they get their cards swapped out for a set that boats up when you hit your NFD.

Whine ITP

** Warning: Beat Post ** Cliffnotes for those that don't like reading about beats

ugh. You can basically take my last post and invert it (graph and all) over the past 5 days.

There's something to be said about spiralling downswings. Beats + Tilt leads to Bad Play. Bad Play means not picking up enough value to outweigh the Beats. So the solution then, is to cut out the Tilt so that the equation can not be completed and perpetuated.

The first 2 days were pure monkey tilt. Sets and AA/KK/QQ (always running into 1 pair bigger -- for those that do not know: KK>QQ, AA>KK, 22>AA) were my biggest losers and I was sum-negative with all of these. Big Pots = Big Variance. The 3rd day was just plain slow-bleed frustration. The last 2 days have been no better variance-wise, but my thought process is right back on track and I'm theoretically crushing again in an alternate universe where Sklansky runs the FED. It is encouraging to know that my bad play game is EV neutral so that's a positive.

The bet/bet/check-fold trend continues vs everyone from 10/8 to 72/5 as the most innocuous boards continue to run out 4 flush/straight. I'm all for a rule change stating flushes must use both holecards aside from the fact that when fish call off their stack vs my flop shove with As4h on AhKs3h9hQh and think they've made a brilliant psychic play which is apparent by my "nh" followed by a simple "ty" -- they are typically still level 0 even after cards are flipped up.

Cliffnotes:
Standard runbad in big pots
Nominate Sklansky to chair the FED
4 flush is the bane of my existence
Brilliant psychic fish

Sorry for the whine, I hope it was at least entertaining. Here's to hoping the long run pops his head in here any minute now...

Article: Why do people do -EV things?

There are things that are inherently +EV and pretty much all of them are necessities: eating, sleeping, making money, wearing clothes. Without these we would die of starvation or embarrassment.

-EV things are almost always non-necessities: luxury and entertainment. But are they really -EV? From an economical standpoint in real $, yes. From a quality of life standpoint in entertainment dollars (E$), no. We would die of boredom without entertainment. Dying is generally a -EV proposition.

The only logical conclusion then is that people actually never choose actions that they calculate to be -EV. People always choose the best option available in their opinion and in some way or another try to accomplish their goals. Because of this and for the purposes of this article, accomplishing goals, whatever they are, is always +EV for the person trying to accomplish them. At least at the time the decision was made in their own mind.

Everyone is free to miscalculate expected value by overestimating, underestimating or excluding any and all variables in any decision they make. This is why some people choose illogical or irrational actions that end up being massively -EV for them. All the stupid things we have done in life probably seemed like a good idea at the time.

One entertainment example is buying a ticket to a hockey game. It is a -EV economical decision. You watch the game, spend a bunch more on overpriced drinks and souvenirs and come home with nothing to show for it but the experience and memories and worthless artifacts. But these experiences and memories are what make life interesting and therefore it is very difficult to determine what an entertainment dollar is actually worth.

Even more so, when coupled with the fact that people have different reasons for undertaking the same economical -EV decision. Some people go to the game because they are fans of the team or players, some like the social atmosphere, some just like the idea of excessive drinking and screaming. I decide that the entertainment value for a mid-level ticket is E$40 and I'll spend $15 on concessions. My breakeven point for deciding to buy a ticket or not is $55 total for the event. I manage to get a ticket for $30 and they are having ½ price concessions, therefore I am left with a pretty big +EV decision when balancing E$ with real $ and decide to go. This is why the closer to the action you get in the arena, the higher the ticket price is as being closer to the action is more entertaining and therefore E$ value goes up.

The overall EV of any activity whether it be economical value, entertainment value or a combination of both, needs to be +EV for everyone involved for it to continue and survive. If any one group of participants become -EV in the activity, the activity ceases to exist because it requires the participation of all groups to function.

Gambling is a form of unnecessary entertainment, an apparently -EV decision, for most people. Yet they continue to deposit one quarter after another into that slot machine for a variety of reasons. Some people like to go to the casino to hang out with friends, some need something to do to kill an hour before work, some are in search of that elusive jackpot. These all have E$ value.

And what happens when they hit their one in a million shot? Bells and sirens go off in celebration and the casino manager comes out all smiles with a monster check and congratulates the lucky winner despite losing a ton of money. He doesn’t inform the winner that a one in a million shot at a $50k jackpot in quarter slots should cost him about $250k to win on average. The fact is that the player has determined that the enjoyment of the anticipation of a jackpot win plus a $50k overlay outweighs losing $250k one quarter at a time.

What would happen if the monster check was written out to “LOL Fish” and the staff came out and ridiculed the winner? One of two options: he either quits gambling or takes his winnings across the street to the next casino and proceeds to dump his entire jackpot in the next few months.

So how does this translate to the poker table? Poker clients do their part to bring fish in by literally giving away millions of dollars in sign up and reload bonuses as overlay on their entertainment value. At the table, we need to act like casino managers and make sure that the entire poker system remains +EV overall to everyone involved. If people become -EV overall at the table, they will either quit or switch tables, the same way the slot winner will quit or change casinos.

Fred is a 20-something and enjoys gambling with online poker. More accurately, Fred enjoys the rush of winning a big pot more than anything. Fred just sat down on your right at a 100NL table for 100BB and plays in a peculiar fashion. He limps in with 100% of his hands and calls a postflop shove 100% of the time with any pair or any draw because of his love of winning big pots.

You pick up pocket 2's in the BB. Everyone folds to Fred who completes in the SB and you check. The flop is A74. Fred checks, you check behind. The turn is the marvelous 2. Fred checks, and you shove for obvious reasons. Fred snap calls and flips over 74o for 2 pair with 10% equity and yells "One Time!" The dealer burns and Fred does bink a 4 one time.

Now before you go and type LOL Fish into the chat box think about what exactly it is that you are saying. In your opinion, Fred made a -EV decision because according to your motives for playing the game, real $ equity is all that counts. However, if the -$80 real EV plus the enjoyment and rush aquired through anticipation of winning $100 (E$) outweighs the direct odds he needed to make the "correct" economical play, he absolutely made the correct +EV play according to his motives for playing.

Telling him that he played incorrectly is just as absurd as him telling you that you're a boring person that doesn't know how to have fun based on the fact that you've folded every hand for the past hour while you were card dead. Your motives, and therefore your decisions, are completely different and neither of you are ever making -EV plays according to your goals.

But we have a reg with a tilt issue sitting across the table and he starts berating Fred. Now we don't really know much about Fred but we do know that embarrassment is a horrible thing to experience and greatly reduces E$. Fred could just be an idiot and he'll quit playing because he is now -EV in the game due to his E$ value being reduced. Or, Fred could be an Ivy league student who plays because it's what the cool kids do and figures he's going to become good at this game now and starts crushing it within months

Either result is detrimental to the ultimate goal (making money) of the reg, who finds berating to be a +EV decision for the purposes of blowing off steam but mistakenly excludes the variables that lead to him accomplishing his ultimate goal from this calculation.

So whenever Fred binks a 4 on you, just smile and say NH. As long as he's having a good time, you'll continue to have a good time, too.

Just consider it your turn to feed the fish.

July Results

I suppose I shouldn't complain about July. But I'm going to =) I really thought I would be crushing this month after the start that I had, but 2 really long breakeven stretches put an end to that. They started to really get to me and I really started questioning my game.

I'm back down at 25NL right now trying to work out what's changed. I don't feel like being an escalator taking my winnings up to 50NL and depositing them there to go back down, as someone in the 2p2 full ring forum said.

I mean, I can see exactly what my problem is in my database - not playing enough hands - but I can't quite figure out how to fix it. I've been trying to cold call a lot of the hands that I used to be able to open raise with at 25NL, but I just seem to hit a run of cold cards and coolers when I move up there and I tighten up again. That and I'm not quite comfortable playing for stacks here with top pair. Then I get tilty and play bad. I think that when I tighten up like that my range becomes very narrow and very obvious to the regs and they are exploiting this regardless of position and I've been picking very bad spots to play back. I'm really trying to keep that frame of mind that I talked about in one of my last posts, but it doesn't always happen.

So graph is needed obviously - graph + $285 in bonus cash. I unexpectedly made Platinum as well which is nice. I really wish I would not have gotten stupid towards the end of the VIP 2x tourney. I think I really had a shot at cashing that for Supernova.

Plans for this month are to play 25NL until I regain confidence. If I run bad at that, I will be playing some SnGs. They have a new $3.40 9 person that I tried out. Slightly high rake, but they are extremely soft. I cashed 3/4 with 2 1st place and 1 2nd place. I think I would be able to play about 10 of these at a time if I wanted.

I've also been putting off updating PT3. The new beta is out which I need, but I hate making new databases constantly and reimporting hands because they have fixed stats and can't convert the current database. Suppose I should let it go overnight tonight.

March Update

One more day in March and I'm not sure if I'll be playing tomorrow or not so I'm updating my blog now. I've had some mixed results for the month playing 25nl - a few really bad tilt sessions, some sessions where I was totally focused and making great reads but losing anyways, and some really great sessions where I found some fish to hand me a bunch of buyins.

I'm slowly getting more used to the 25nl flow. Some players are a lot more aggressive here than at 10nl so patience really pays off. Most of them are still weak-tight though. I've played a total of 11k hands of 25nl this month and about the same for 10nl.

I ran quite poorly at 10nl and that's where most of my tilty sessions were so my winrate for that is only 3.7ptBB/100 over 12k hands, which is quite low for me. I would often drop down if I was playing poorly at 25nl, not really the best idea when I should probably just quit for the day.

25nl was a much better level running at 7.1ptBB/100 over 11k hands. I played a lot more nitty at this level and I think I need to get over that. My work on aggression is starting to pay off though and I'm keeping it above 2 for the most part. I'm going to start taking shots at 50nl hopefully this week if I continue to run well at 25nl. I'm thinking maybe 20k total hands at 25nl would be better before I make the move permanent according to my bankroll management post - that's only another 9k and I'm playing about 2k a day when I get a couple of hours.

I've heard that 100nl is actually easier than 50nl because so many TAG regs get stuck at 50nl and take a long time to move up. I guess I'll have to find out for myself. There must be a bunch of gamblers that figure anything less than a $1BB isn't any fun and that's less than the minimum at most casino's anyways - usually they offer $1/$2. They don't realize that online is MUCH tougher than live. I've read that 25nl is comparable to $1/$2 live and the game plays totally different, not as many limpers and the standard raise is much lower. I hardly ever play live so I don't have a lot of experience with that and can't imaging opening for 12BB and getting 1 or 2 callers.

Anyways, graph is obviously needed:

Small Swong Today

I had a bit of a spewy start to the day. I don't know what my problem was but I was tilting quite a bit, running card dead, and trying to force hands. That led to a 3.5 buyin loss. I managed to get everything under control again though and got those buyins back finishing the day at -$2, lol.

I'm almost 1/2 way to my goal of 10k hands at 25nl for this month and I'm running at 11ptBB/100. I'm actually a little more than 1/2 if I count Everest, but I didn't keep great records there when PT didn't work for me. If I keep running at this rate, I'll have just enough to meet the $ requirement for my BR plan, as well as the required winrate.

I was hoping to play a little more tonight, but the tables are dying down. There's only 65k people on, and that's only 1/2 of what it is at peak hours. Surprising for a weekend, but maybe it's because of the holiday.

I'm starting to notice a lot more regs than at lower limits, too. There's a few guys that seem to be machines that are able to play 16 hours a day on at least 4 tables (I'm assuming because they're on in the morning and still on in the evening when I come back). I don't know what they're doing at 25nl if they can play that much. That's got to be at least 3-4k hands a day if they take a couple breaks and they don't run too bad either.

Wow I Suck at Flipaments

I found a table that appeared to be doing flips this evening, which is pretty standard for Everest. There's a guy shoving over anyone that limps, so I'm obviously limp/calling my strong hands and folding the rest.

I went on a nice 4 buyin slide against this guy:

AQ<22
AQ<87
AK<98
AQ<65 (there were 3 other callers here with AJ, A8, and KQ - 65 won with 2 pair AI PF)

Villain sits out up 7 buyins after shoving 350BB into 2 stacks of 200BB each with T2o. Sigh.

Settling back into full ring 25nl

I decided to settle back into grinding 25nl today, just 4 tables. During my breakeven stretch I think I was a little tilty in the impatient department and played far too many marginal hands. So I sat down and crunched a few ptBB/100 numbers and made myself an Excel ptBB calculator to remind myself that you don't have to be up a whole lot in an hour to be considered to be crushing the game - I consider "crushing" to be 10+/100 at 10nl and 8+/100 at 25nl etc. This sure helps to reduce the number of marginal situations I get myself into and the result is me playing more hands that I am in control of.

Played 500 hands so far today at 15/100 and would like to play another ~9500 in the next week or so before I start trying to move up to 50nl. I am currently overrolled for 50nl and almost rolled for 100nl, lol I'm such a nit.

Oh and here's my graph for the year so far - I haven't posted it in a while. That ugly stretch in the middle is the last week of January until the last week of February.

Variance Continues

The sick variance continues on Party Poker. It must be me. I don't know what has gotten into people lately but I wish I could cash in on it. They're out there chasing the idiot end of a gutshot straight with an underpair to my pot sized bets - and hitting. All sorts of garbage like that. I really need to start value betting harder and maybe overbetting pots, but it is so tough when you feel like you're behind when you're 70% ahead.

At least today finished on the positive side. Barely. Sigh. So frustrating. Off to work now. fjdskal;f

Monkey Tilt on Stars

Stars has doomswitched me for the last 2 days, so I cashed out now from there. Probably go play at Party for a bit. My sets and overpairs just were not holding out today - my money made off of sets was actually way in the negative today, which is not supposed to happen that much.

I cashed out before I tilted it away. Already down 3 buyins from my sets not holding. Lost with KK on KdTd5d board after a guy with 8d6d 3bet me preflop. Next hand I lost with KK after limp reraising to 50BB preflop and a fish (70/0/0.5) calls all in on the turn J957with 44 and hits his 2 outer on the river. I really don't understand the thought process here, I don't think there is one. Sigh, so frustrating, and on top of that I couldn't hit a flop if my life depended on it. I don't know what happened but I am getting 3bet left right and centre and I'm really tired of it. I'm going to take a break now.

Happy New Year - Graphs and Such

Time for a graph update. This graph is from the start of this blog on November 1st to today. I only made about $140 mostly at 5nl and 10nl - FR and 6 max - in December due to it being such a busy month and I didn't really feel like playing much. The last 22k hands are from December.

I wanted to be playing 25nl by now but I took a couple of shots with some bad results. I will be moving up to 25nl in January as I currently have 20 buyins for that level - probably once I have 25 buyins.

I also had this hand today which put me on major tilt, I considered cashing out because I run so bad on this site for some reason, but thought twice about it and decided to stay since the games are so loose. I'll keep plugging away at it. Managed to get my money back about 100 hands later from the same guy. The appearance of tilt after it's gone can sometimes work amazingly well - ie. shoving AA the next hand after a bad beat, there is a huge chance you will be called by 99+/AJ+.

Moving Up Again - On to 10NL

After finishing the 10k hands at 5NL, I played about 400 hands of 10NL just to get going this evening. I'm pretty tired now, just getting home from work, so I will have to officially start 10NL tomorrow. Despite that, I was running fairly well at 16BB/100. It would have been even higher if not for this hand:

I see a lot of people get furious and call these people fish or donks or whatever. DON'T DO THIS. This guy was calling off way more than pot odds allowed, and on the turn he called more than implied odds would give him. Do not berate the fish, it only encourages them to play better and you make money off of them making mistakes, especially huge ones like this. Worst of all, they will most likely leave the table if you make fun of them or try to 'coach' them.

Instead of wasting your time in the chat box, take that time to write a note on him and add him to your buddy list. If you find yourself feeling the urge to type something nasty into the chat box, I recommend just turning the chat right off. This is what I did a while back and it helped me get over my tilt problems, so that I can now turn my chat on without it affecting my play.
